92-year-old runner sets marathon record
Allansmith, an old woman from Koloa, Hawaii, broke the record at the Honolulu Marathon in December 2022, completing the 42.195 km in 11 hours 19 minutes 49 seconds at the age of 92 years and 194 days. In 2021, she also completed this marathon with a time of 10 hours 38 minutes 59 seconds.
But it was not until August 2, that the Guinness Book of Records confirmed and awarded the record certificate to Allansmith. Runner, who just turned 93, said he has been training hard since breaking a record in Hawaii. Allansmith says he works out year-round, but increases his mileage about 18 weeks before the marathon.
"The pace and distance will vary each day, but no matter what, I'll still wear my running shoes and be out of the house six days a week. On average, I run close to 60km per week," added Allansmith.
Allansmith started running at age 46 and sees her doctor's work help her benefit the body and mind of a healthy diet and active lifestyle. "I see a direct link between running and health. I would say that a healthy lifestyle allows me to maintain a very high quality of life," said the retired doctor.
In addition to the thrill of breaking a world record, Allansmith also enjoys doing it in his favorite tournament. "The Honolulu Marathon is my favorite, in part because they don't close the track to the cut-of-time (COT) milestones. This allows even the slowest runners to finish the race," he said. 93-year-old runner explains.
Allansmith added of the finishing moment: "There was a group of people filming and cheering me on, even though I finished about 11 hours after the race started. It was a great feeling of accomplishment and joy."
The 93-year-old runner wants to run the marathon for as long as possible, and hopes his performance at the 2022 Honolulu Marathon isn't the ultimate world record. Allansmith revealed that she wants to become the oldest female runner to complete the 10km and half marathon this year.
