Alcaraz vs Sinner in Miami Open semifinals

USA Carlos Alcaraz maintained top form when he defeated Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open on March 30.

Alcaraz has yet to lose a set since the BNP Paribas Open two weeks ago. He will meet Jannik Sinner for the second time in 12 days, since defeating Italy in Indian Wells. Sinner is ranked 11th in the ATP but will be in the top 10 when the scoreboard is updated next week.

Alcaraz won their 10th game in a row despite facing Fritz who was playing well and had a powerful serve on hard courts. The American tennis player is the 15th person to lose to Alcaraz while in the top 10 ATP. Alcaraz needs two more wins to become the youngest person to win the Indian Wells and Miami doubles, and hold the number one spot in the world.

Fritz failed to develop the serve this match. He lost in the first game, then missed the break-point twice in the first set. The match was interrupted because of the rain but this did not stop Alcaraz from maintaining a destructive form. The Spaniard continued to win the second set holding the ball, keeping this advantage before taking advantage of another break-point to close the second set in just 32 minutes.

Winning the ninth seed after 78 minutes, Alcaraz increased the number of wins from the beginning of the season to 18. He had only lost once, in the Rio Open final to Cameron Norrie. No player from Roger Federer in 2017 has won both Masters 1000s in the US in March.

"Meeting Sinner will be very difficult because he has continuously advanced in recent tournaments," predicted Alcaraz about the reunion with the opponent in the semifinals. "I'm sure we'll have a lot of big games in the future. We're still improving."

Going to the semi-finals is also Daniil Medvedev. The fourth seed won the phenomenal Christopher Eubanks 6-3, 7-5. Did not lose the set, but Medvedev experienced a more difficult match than expected. Eubanks played well and only lost the beat after the two players took a break because of the rain.

Medvedev will face compatriot Karen Khachanov in the semi-finals. The previous 14th seed beat Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
