Alonso: 'F1 is so boring'

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso has said many teams are no longer interested in competing in F1 for the 2022 season.

"Unfortunately, F1 is still very predictable," Alonso told NOS. "I don't know if there is such a sport. F1 is still too boring. Even if it is Formula One, there is always a speed gap between teams."

Alonso, 40, is still in the Alpine squad for F1. This is his second season with France and is expected to last until next season, but it has not been confirmed.

After 11 stages (half a season), Alpine ranks fifth, and Alonso ranks 10th personally. His best result was to finish fifth in the British Grand Prix. At the Canadian Grand Prix, the Spanish veteran was surprised when he finished second, but ended up only finishing ninth.

"Sometimes, when you have a chance to get into the first group, everything will be great. It's like in Canada, when I started with Max Verstappen. That's when I proved that I can still do unexpected things. Everyone, make me more motivated. But it's hard to imagine that with my current ability, I can stand on the throne," Alonso said. "We didn't work hard to win, and I don't think the situation will change soon. The team has been focusing on the 2023 season and hopes that the car will be better."

Over the years, F1 has changed laws and introduced new rules to make the race more competitive. In the 2022 season, the audience witnessed more drivers chasing and surpassing. However, this victory is still just a contest between the top three teams of Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes. The only time in the 11 stages that have gone ahead that drivers who have not played for these three teams have reached the top three was at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. At the time, McLaren driver Lando Norris finished third.

Alonso won the world championship twice in 2005 and 2006, when he wore a Renault jersey. After joining McLaren in 2007, he returned to Renault until 2009. At that time, the French team gradually declined, which led Alonso to switch to Ferrari from 2010. He played for Ferrari for five seasons, three of which finished second behind Sebastian Vettel. The Spanish driver returned to McLaren, joining England Racing from 2015-2018. His highest position during this period was 10th. Alonso then experienced two years in many events such as the World Endurance Championships, Le Mans 24 Hours Endurance Race or Dakar Rally. In 2021, he returned to Renault's new name Alpine Team.
