Arsenal hits a sad milestone if they don't win the Premier League

If Man City successfully defends the title, Arsenal will become the club that leads the English Premier League for the longest time without being able to win the title.

The race to win the Premier League was almost over after round 36, when Man City won 3-0 at Everton and Arsenal lost to Brighton at the Emirates home. The army under Pep Guardiola is currently 4 points ahead of Arsenal, and only needs to win two points in the remaining three matches to be sure to defend the title.

In early April, Arsenal held the advantage when they were eight points higher than second in the table of Man City. But a series of four games without a win - drawing with Liverpool, West Ham, Southampton, losing to Man City - made the "Gunners" lose both the right to self-determination as well as the first place in the hands of the opponent.

According to Sportbible, teachers and students Mikel Arteta lead the Premier League up to 93% of the time this season. This will be the longest period of time that a club at the top of the table cannot be crowned

In that case, Arsenal would break the record set by themselves in the 2002-2003 season, when leading for 71% of the season but let Man Utd pass at the end of the season and win the championship. At that time, the "Gunners" finished second with 78 points, five points behind Man Utd.

The same scenario played out in the 2007-08 season, when the team under Arsene Wenger had 57% of the season at the top, but still lost the title to Man Utd. That season, Arsenal even dropped to third with 83 points, two points behind Chelsea and five points behind Man Utd.

Liverpool took the lead for 51% of the time in the 2018-2019 season, but let Man City take the lead in the sprint. Guardiola's team won the last 14 matches to be crowned with 98 points. Liverpool ranked right behind with 97 points - the highest score of the second-place club in the history of the top English leagues.

In fifth place is another team under Wenger. In the 2013-14 season, Arsenal led 48% of the season, but fell in the second half and even dropped to fourth, seven points behind champions Man City.

The current season, Arsenal have won 25 out of 36 matches in the Premier League this season, drawn six and lost the remaining five. Only in the 1930-1931 (28), 1970-1971 (29), 2001-2002 (26) and 2003-2004 (26) seasons did Arsenal win more games in a single season. The special thing is that Arsenal won all four seasons. "They may not win this season, against the power of the Man City machine, but Arteta's army can match the best Arsenal teams in history," commented Sportbible.

In the remaining two rounds, Arsenal will be a guest of Nottingham Forest on May 20 and will receive Wolves at the Emirates Stadium on May 28.
