Arsenal is 5 points ahead of Man City
Arsenal paid off the debt they lost to Everton 0-1 at Everton on February 4 to reach 60 points in 25 Premier League matches this season, equaling the record set in 2003-2004 and 2007-2008. In particular, the "Gunners" won the championship with an unbeaten record in the 2003-2004 season and finished third in the 2007-2008 season, behind Chelsea and the champion Man Utd.
For the 12th time, Arsenal have scored at least four goals against Everton in the Premier League, more than any club has ever done against an opponent in the history of the tournament. Arsenal also hit 100 wins in their 204th encounter with Everton, thereby becoming the first team in the history of the English league to reach 100 victories against an opponent. The remaining matches against Everton, they drew 43 and lost 61.
At the Emirates Stadium yesterday, coach Mikel Arteta kept the same 11 players who had started when they won 1-0 at Leicester in round 25 on February 25. For the 12th time, Arsenal have kept the same starting lineup in the Premier League this season, their continental balance was established in the 1996-1997 season, the season the club appointed manager Arsene Wenger.
The hosts dominated, 74 per cent possession, 15 shots on target with five shots on target - compared to Everton's eight and five. The difference was made in the 40th minute, when Oleksandr Zinchenko drifted to the right and poked a gap for Bukayo Saka to get down to a decisive finish in a tight corner to beat goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. At the age of 21, Saka has contributed to 51 goals in the Premier League with 27 goals and 24 assists. Tournament history has only recorded five people younger than Saka to have directly participated in 50 goals, including Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney, Robbie Fowler, Cesc Fàbregas and Chris Sutton.
In the third minute of the match, Saka competed for the ball from Idrissa Gueye, creating conditions for Gabriel Martinelli to get down to the corner to double the lead. The line referee raised a flag to warn the Brazilian striker was offside, but VAR went in to recognize the goal for Arsenal. Saka and Martinelli both scored 10th in the Premier League this season. Arsenal are currently the only club to have two players reach this milestone in the tournament.
In the second half, the host continued to play explosively to score two more goals. In the 71st minute, Leandro Trossard accelerated on the left and then passed into the penalty area to let Martin Odegaard cushion the close, scoring the ninth goal in the Premier League this season.
Ten minutes later, Arsenal sealed victory under the same scenario. Zinchenko poked a gap for the substitute striker Eddie Nketiah to cross down the left wing and stretch for Martinelli to cushion the ball past Pickford's two feet.
Arsenal would have won even more if Nketiah, Martinelli or Trossard took advantage of the opportunity. But the 4-0 victory was enough to help Arteta's teachers and students widen the gap with Man City to five points, when the two teams played 25 matches together.
On March 4, the "Gunners" received Bournemouth in round 26 and then became a guest of Sporting in the first leg of the 1/8 round of the Europa League on March 9.
