Bayern clears the way for Nagelsmann to take over the German national team

Bayern is ready to release his contract to let coach Julian Nagelsmann lead the German national team to replace Hansi Flick, but with two conditions.

In March 2023, the defending Bundesliga champions fired Nagelsmann and appointed Thomas Tuchel. Although he has been no longer in his position for more than half a year, Nagelsmann is still under contract with Bayern until 2026, receiving about 145,000 USD per week.

Director of the German Football Federation (DFB) Rudi Voller is said to want to replace Hansi Flick with Nagelsmann, and sees the former Bayern coach as a "dream solution" for the position of head coach of the German national team.

According to Bild, Bayern realizes the importance of the German team quickly having a new coach in order to have the best preparation for Euro 2024 held at home. Therefore, the owner of Allianz Arena did not ask DFB to pay the fee to break Nagelsmann's contract, but set two conditions.

First, if they release Nagelsmann's contract, Bayern wants DFB to ensure the appointment of this 36-year-old coach to lead the team, not freely move to another club. The second is that the DFB must pay Nagelsmann's entire salary, and Bayern will no longer be responsible for any of it.

Bayern CEO Uli Hoeness affirmed that the club will not stop Nagelsmann from leading the German team. "The deal, if it fails, is certainly not because of Bayern," he said. According to Sky Sports, DFB has not had any contact with Nageslmann's representative.

After Flick was fired, DFB Director Rudi Voller became interim coach of the German team in the friendly match against France at Westfalen's home ground in Dortmund last night on September 12. Voller - who led the team to the 2002 World Cup runner-up position - has two assistants, U20 team coach Hannes Wolf, and former striker and 35-year-old former national team player Sandro Wagner. The changes were immediately effective as Germany beat France 2-1 to cut a three-match losing streak.

Voller said he only coached one match and expected the DFB to find a new coach before two friendly matches against the United States on October 14 and Mexico on October 17. "It is important that we quickly start to create a feeling of excitement. That comes with results, but with the new coach it is possible," the DFB director emphasized.

In the Sky Sports survey, Jurgen Klopp was the coach voted for by the most participants. But Klopp will not leave Liverpool mid-season and still has a contract until 2026. The 56-year-old coach performing a dual role, both leading Liverpool and taking charge of the German national team, has also been ruled out.

In addition to Klopp and Nagelsmann, other candidates listed by German media include Julian Nagelsmann, Miroslav Klose, Jurgen Klinsmann or foreign leaders such as Oliver Glasner, Louis van Gaal and Zinedine Zidane.
