Bayern eliminated in Tuchel's second game
Dayot Upamecano headed the opener for Bayern from the 19th minute, but they could not keep the advantage. Freiburg needed just eight minutes to equalize. Midfielder Nicolas Hofler volleyed for the visitors.
Bayern hold the ball 67%, but not really effective. Tuchel's side finished 16 times, just six more than Freiburg. Most of that ball went out, or into the hands of goalkeeper Mark Flekken. Bayern's best chance left was a header from full-back Pavard.
When the two teams were about to kick extra time, the unexpected happened in the 90+3 minute. Jamal Musiala touched the ball inside the box and the referee awarded Freiburg a penalty. Lucas Holer tricked goalkeeper Yann Sommer on the 11m mark, fixing the victory for the away team.
Bayern must stop before the semi-finals of the German Cup for the third consecutive season. Two seasons ago, they were both eliminated in the second round. Meanwhile, Freiburg continues the journey to find tickets to the final season for the second consecutive season. Last season, teachers and coaches Christian Streich lost to Leipzig 2-4 in the final penalty shootout.
The defeat in the German Cup erased Tuchel's good start as Bayern coach. Before that, he and the new team won Dortmund 4-2 in the 26th round of the Bundesliga. Tuchel won the German Cup when he led Dortmund in the 2016-2017 season.
Bayern still have goals in the Bundesliga. Tuchel's teachers and students are leading and are two points ahead of Dortmund. This weekend, they will be guests on Freiburg's own field. In the Champions League, Bayern played two quarter-final matches against Man City on April 11 and 19.
