Boston Marathon 2023 announced the list of female elites
Besides world champion Goytom Gebreslase and Edna Kiplagat - two-time Boston Marathon champion, the tournament has three new faces competing for the first time. They include Lonah Salpeter - Israeli athlete who won the bronze medal in the 2022 world, with the Ethiopian duo, Sharon Lokedi - the champion of the New Yor City Marathon 2022 and Amane Beriso - the champion of the Valencia Marathon 2022.
Beriso, with a record of 2 hours 14 minutes 58 seconds in Valencia in December 2022, is holding the third best women's marathon record in history. Only two others, both Kenyan runners, achieved more impressive results with 2 hours 14 minutes 4 seconds - Brigid Kosgei's world record at the 2019 Chicago Marathon, and 2 hours 14 minutes 18 seconds by Ruth Chepng 'etich at the Chicago Marathon 2022.
"I'm really excited, looking forward to this year's Boston Marathon. Running on the track and in the incredible atmosphere of this race is a dream of mine," Salpeter said. This Kenyan-born runner finished second at the New York City Marathon in November 2022, and won a bronze medal in 10,000m at the European Athletics Championships in August 2022.
The runners-up and third-place finishers at the 2022 Boston Marathon, including Ethiopian Ababel Yeshaneh and Kenyan Mary Ngugi, also returned, giving their aspiration to conquer the top spot. Last year, Yeshaneh finished second with 2 hours 21 minutes 5 seconds, just 5 seconds behind champion Peres Jepchirchir. Ngugi finished third with 2 hours 21 minutes 32 seconds.
Another big name returning to the Boston Marathon with the desire to surpass the threshold in 2023 is Joyciline Jepkosgei, a Kenyan runner who has won the New York City Marathon and London. Last year, she only finished seventh, with a parameter of 2 hours 24 minutes 43 seconds.
The Boston Marathon is one of six events in the World Marathon Majors system, alongside the New York, Chicago, London, Berlin and Tokyo events. The 2023 tournament - the 127th period in history - will take place on April 17, 2022, with 30,000 athletes. BAA will announce the male elite list in the next few days.
