Brazil is eliminated in the group stage of the Women's World Cup 2023
Brazil is third in Group F with four points, respectively behind Jamaica with five points and France with seven points – the team won 6-3 Panama in the match at the same time. This is the third time Brazil has been eliminated from the group stage of the Women's World Cup after 1991 and 1995.
Brazil started jubilantly with a 4-0 victory over Panama, but then lost 1-2 to France. Before the last match, Brazil was ranked eighth in the FIFA rankings, much higher than Jamaica - ranked 43rd in FIFA. Four years ago, Brazil beat Jamaica easily 3-0.
The developments on the Melbourne field this afternoon 2/8 were as expected when Brazil completely controlled the game, with 73% ball control. Simultaneously, the team hit 18 shots with eight on target, compared to Jamaica's three and none on target.
Brazil's ability to take advantage of poor opportunities on the same day of stellar performance by goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer made the opponent frustrated. The Jamaican goalkeeper repeatedly refused Marta's delicious opportunities in the 11th minute, Tamires in the 20th minute or Debinha in the 54th minute to preserve the net. Jamaica became a phenomenon when it reached the round of 16 with three matches without conceding and scoring only one goal.
Brazil's early departure was the next surprise after the defending Olympic champion Canada was eliminated in Group B. Two legends Christine Sinclair (Canada) and Marta (Brazil) also missed the opportunity to become the first player to score in six consecutive World Cups.
