Brazil's bad omen when losing to Cameroon

Qatar's 0-1 loss to Cameroon in the last leg of Group G last night can become a psychological challenge for Brazil in the remaining journey at the 2022 World Cup.

This is Brazil's first defeat at the 2022 World Cup, after two wins over Serbia 2-0 and Switzerland 1-0. This is a bad statistic in the history of World Cup appearances of the yellow and green shirt team. In the previous five championships, they did not lose a single match.

On the way to winning its first World Cup in 1958, Brazil won five and drew one. Four years later, they successfully defended the championship with the same record. In 1970, Brazil won all six matches. In 1994, they won six and a draw. In 2002, they won seven matches on the way to the last crown so far.

The outcome at Lusail also saw Brazil's first defeat in the group stage of the World Cup since 1998. In the final group stage match at the tournament in France 24 years ago, they lost 1-2 to Norway. After that, Ronaldo Nazario and his teammates reached the final and lost 0-3 to host France.

Yesterday was also Brazil's first defeat against an African representative at the World Cup. Before that, they won all seven matches against teams from the black continent, including Zaire (3-0 in 1974), Algeria (1-0 in 1986), Cameroon (3-0 in 1994), Morocco (3 -0 in 1998), Ghana (3-0 in 2006), Ivory Coast (3-1 in 2010) and Cameroon (4-1 in 2014).

In the opposite direction, Cameroon won its first World Cup in 20 years, since a 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia. Then, in the 2010 and 2014 appearances, Cameroon lost all three group stage matches.

On the pitch against Cameroon, right-back Dani Alves - 39 years and six months - set the record for the oldest player to play for Brazil at the World Cup. The old record of 38 years and two months belongs to midfielder Thiago Silva (coming on in the 1-0 win over Switzerland).

Beating Brazil with Vincent Aboubakar's goal in the 90+2 minute, the African representative had four points but only ranked third in Group G. Brazil and Switzerland ranked above, with the same six points. In the 1/8 round, Brazil met South Korea, while Switzerland played Portugal.
