AzerbaijanMagnus Carlsen is in danger of being eliminated from the 2023 Chess World Cup when he lost to Vincent Keymer in the fourth round of standard chess.

Carlsen is still unlucky in the chess World Cup as he has never won the tournament, and is in danger of extending this year's streak of nothing. Before the 19-year-old talent Keymer, the world's number one player made a mistake in the middle and lost good, making the game irreversible. After 58 moves, the world's youngest number three player beat Carlsen for the first time and created the biggest shock since the beginning of the tournament.

Keymer has an August 2023 Elo of 2,701, but his coefficient for the 2023 Chess World Cup is 2,690, because the tournament starts at the end of July. So this is the third time since 2015, Carlsen has lost again. a player who is not a Super Grandmaster. All three defeats of the Norwegian player took place against teenage opponents, Andrey Esipenko at Tata Steel 2021 and Hans Niemann at Sinquefield Cup 2022.

Carlsen has also lost four standard games this year, more than in 2018-2022. His current Elo dropped to only 2,832, the lowest since 2017. He will hold the white piece in game two at 6pm today, August 10, Hanoi time, and must win against Keymer if he doesn't want to be eliminated early.

In game one against Keymer on August 9, Carlsen sat at the table just three seconds before kick-off, and he maintained his balance until mid-game. However, the mistake of the five-time world champion came in country 36. Carlsen had 50 minutes left, while Keymer had six minutes. But the Norwegian player only took three minutes to make the next move, leaving him in a losing position.

Before shaking hands, Carlsen shook his head in frustration. This is his fifth time attending the World Cup, after 2005, 2007, 2017 and 2021, but his best achievement is only reaching the semi-finals. This is also the rare peak individual tournament he has never won, partly because of repeated refusals to attend.

Keymer was born on November 15, 2004, a student of former world runner-up Peter Leko. The 19-year-old player is ranked number one in Germany, and is the fastest runner-up in the world in 2022 after Carlsen himself.

In the fourth round, another surprise was the defeat of the world number eight Wesley So before Alexey Sarana, even though he held the white piece. The player who just eliminated Le Quang Liem in the third round Ruslan Ponomariov also lost to Ferenc Berkes in the first game of the fourth round.
