Chelsea must liquidate a series of players next summer
Since being bought by billionaire Todd Boehly for $5.23 billion in May 2022, Chelsea has spent $671 million to buy players. This made the Stamford Bridge team lose $ 337 million in the last two seasons, including $ 149 million in the 2021-2022 season. The Financial Fair Play (FFP) law only allows them to lose less than $129 million for three consecutive years.
Therefore, Chelsea is likely to have to liquidate a series of players before June 30 to not be sanctioned. According to Sunsport, self-trained players such as Mason Mount, Trevoh Chalobah, Conor Gallagher, Ruben Loftus-Cheek or Callum Hudson-Odoi have the highest risk of leaving, because they do not have to pay recruitment fees but can bring in huge profits to cover losses.
Several other first team stars such as midfielder Mateo Kovacic, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, defender Ben Chilwell and wingers Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic are also considered to be in need of liquidation.
Among the players who can leave Stamford Bridge, Chilwell is being closely followed by Man City. The Premier League champions are willing to spend $86 million to recruit England's left-back, but Chelsea is not easy to sell the pillar to the opponent. Mount is also a hot commodity in the market, and Ziyech almost joined PSG in January but had to stay because Chelsea sent the wrong contract three times.
Chelsea blamed the British government's sanctions on former owner Roman Abramovich for putting them at a disadvantage in signing new recruits or sponsors, leading to unusual cost increases and loss of revenue. Abramovich once raised the bar for Chelsea, but was opposed for supporting Russian President Vladimir Putin in a special military operation in Ukraine.
