Marin Cilic, a potential opponent of Rafael Nadal in the fourth round, was eliminated just before the first round of Wimbledon because of Covid-19 on June 27.

Cilic shared a positive test on Monday morning, hours before his opening match against Michael McDonald. The 2017 Wimbledon runner-up is the second highest seed in the 8th division, the branch also has the second seed Rafael Nadal. The two are expected to meet in the fourth round as this branch has no one else in the top 20 seeds.

"I have to be isolated and unfortunately will miss the tournament. My heart breaks down because I have to leave Wimbledon this way," Cilic's announcement on Instagram had a paragraph.

Cilic is in the best performance in the last three years. He had just reached the semi -finals of Roland Garros earlier this month, climbing to No. 17 in the world. The former American champion expanded well for Wimbledon when in the semi -finals of the ATP 500 in Queen’s Club 10 days ago.

In the run-up to Wimbledon, Cilic played a 90-minute practice with Novak Djokovic on Centre Court on June 24. The Croatian player then felt unwell and isolated himself at the hotel, then received a positive test for Covid-19.

Wimbledon significantly loosened the rules of communication in this year's tournament. But, the infected tennis players before the departure will be disqualified. "We are still following the Government's regulations on isolating anyone infected with Covid-19," Wimbledon spokesman said on June 27.

Instead of Cilic is the player who lost to Nuno Borges. Besides Nadal, this branch has only two seeds, Botic Van de Zandschulp and Lorenzo Sonego.

Nadal will launch at about 21h today, meet Federico Cerundolo. The Spanish player has not played any official match on the pitch since 2019.
