Coach Becker considers Djokovic to be the typical athlete of the century
"As a German, I want Graf to keep the record forever. But Djokovic did an extraordinary thing and he is also my best friend," former world number one Boris Becker said of his 378-week record as world number one. Djokovic, in an interview with Eurosport on February 27.
According to Becker, who coached Djokovic from 2013-2016, the Serbian is one of the greatest sports athletes of the century. He said: "Djokovic has gone down in history as a great champion. I don't think anyone has surpassed his number one week record. I am proud to have been a part of Djokovic's success. ".
In this interview, Becker also revealed that Djokovic supported him and his family during his time in prison for tax evasion last year. Becker had an illustrious playing career, winning six Grand Slams and three ATP Finals out of 49 ATP titles. Djokovic is the only player Becker has ever coached. He switched to being a commentator for sports channels after parting ways with Nole.
Djokovic has just reached the milestone of 378 weeks holding the number one ATP, more than the record of female legend Graf a week. He still holds this position and will increase the record when the scoreboard is updated on Monday, March 6.
Djokovic is far ahead of second-placed Roger Federer (310 weeks). Only these two have held the ATP top for more than 300 weeks since the scoreboard was released in 1973. In the women's group, the other two players to surpass this mark besides Graf are Martina Navratilova (332 weeks) and Serena Williams (319).
Djokovic's record could last for many more decades because the man behind him still playing is Rafael Nadal with 209 weeks of number one, Andy Murray is far behind with just 41 weeks. Among the young players, Carlos Alcaraz has 20 weeks, Daniil Medvedev keeps 16 weeks. No other player still playing in the top 30 of these statistics.
