Coach Enrique: 'Players cannot be the center of the world'
"Football players always have to appear in public. When you're on a sports team, you need to be happy when your teammates or substitutes score. is the center of the world," Enrique said in an interview with PSG's TV channel.
Enrique was selected by PSG this season, replacing Christophe Galtier. As soon as he moved in, the Spanish coach faced many problems, especially the future of the number one star Kylian Mbappe. Due to his refusal to renew his contract, the French striker was put on the trading floor by PSG, and threatened to reserve him for the whole season. Recently, the knot seems to be gradually loosened when the 24-year-old striker is back to training and playing with the first team.
PSG did not play well in the first two matches of Ligue 1 2023-2024. They were held to a 0-0 draw by Lorient and then shared the points with Toulouse in the match Mbappe came on as a substitute and scored the opening goal from the penalty spot. However, coach Enrique insists he has not changed the style of play. "Overall, giving a general idea does not mean the team will always play like that. We attack in different ways. The goal is to make PSG an unpredictable team that can attack through the bridges. winger and center forward," he said.
Enrique did not respond when asked about PSG's Champions League goal. He admitted that he does not know how many titles PSG can afford, but will do his best in all competitions this season.
The former Barca coach also shared that his biggest difficulty since moving to PSG was learning French. He said: "I want to learn as quickly as possible. But pronunciation is too difficult. I don't know when I will succeed, but my goal is to speak French fluently. I will probably be here for 10 years."
Enrique has coached clubs Barca B, Roma, Celta Vigo and Barca. With Barca, from 2014 to 2017, he won two La Liga, three King's Cups, one Spanish Super Cup, one Champions League, one European Super Cup, one FIFA Club World Cup and a treble. In the 2016-2017 season, in the 1/8 Champions League round, it was Enrique's team that crushed PSG 6-1 in the second leg, after losing 0-4 in the first leg.
Enrique led Spain from July 2018 to the end of the 2022 World Cup. He led the team to the semi-finals of Euro 2021, second place in the Nations League 2020-2021 and into the 1/8 round of the 2022 World Cup.
