Coach Gadia: 'Vietnam punishes all mistakes of Guam'

Phu Tho Coach Dominic Gadia assessed Vietnam as the top team in Asia, so he felt calm when Guam lost 0-6 in the opening match of Group C U23 Asia 2024 qualifying match.

At Viet Tri Stadium on the evening of September 6, Guam entered the game confidently. They somewhat limited the attack power of Vietnam, and near the end of the first half had to receive the first goal from Le Van Do's shot. But in the second half, coach Gadia's team lost strength, continuously conceding a goal from Nguyen Van Tung's penalty and the finishing phases of Ho Van Cuong, Nguyen Thanh Nhan, Hoang Van Toan and Bui Vi Hao.

Coach Gadia said he prepared as best as possible, letting the players watch videos about Vietnam many times, but real combat is different from theory. "We conceded six goals and every goal we conceded was a lesson," the coach said. "Against Asia's top rival, we are punished after every mistake."

In the first qualifying round, Guam did not have any practice matches or friendly matches to match the lineup. Therefore, failure is in the prediction of coach Gadia.

According to the 37-year-old leader, in the first half, the team had good physical strength and kept a reasonable squad distance, but lost everything in the second half. Meanwhile, Vietnam exerted constant pressure and had many opportunities to win more than 6-0. Gadia assessed midfielder Le Van Do and left-back Vo Minh Trong as the most dangerous threats, playing an important role in Vietnam's attack.

After the first match, Vietnam leads Group C with three points equal to Yemen - the team won Singapore 3-0. The second round took place on September 9, Singapore played Guam, and Vietnam met Yemen - the match was almost decisive for the top spot in the group.
