Coach Mai Duc Chung: 'Vietnam is at a disadvantage over the Philippines'
"We lost completely. I don't know, I was responsible for all the mistakes," coach Maidezhong said after losing 4-0 to the Philippines in the semi-finals. "We have anticipated the difficulties facing the hosts. In addition to playing well and improving, the Philippines also gained firepower from the stands. This is the driving force for them to sublimate and win."
Vietnam defeated the Philippines 2-1 in the group stage of the 31st East Games. Reunited about two months later, head coach Maidezhong's team took the lead again, but could not recreate the upper reaches like Kimpa Stadium. The team obviously lost in bodybuilding and physical strength, and then broke the game 0-4. The defeat prevented Vietnam from defending its title in Southeast Asia.
As the host, the Philippines' competition schedule is smoother. They are in Group A with six teams, but play two rounds first and finish the group first. Vietnam are in Group B with five teams, but it ends a day later. According to coach Maidezhong, the reduced rest time is the reason why his players are not performing as expected.
"We only have one day to prepare, while the Philippines have two days off. Vietnam is at a disadvantage over the hosts. If we have two days off, maybe the physical fitness of the players will be improved. More," Mr. Chung explained. "The last round against Myanmar was very stressful and physically exhausted. The short rest affected the physical fitness of the players in this game."
On July 17, Vietnam will again face Myanmar-the team that lost 2-0 to Thailand in the semi-final-for the bronze medal. Head coach Mai Dezhong said that he would revive the spirit of the players and let them work hard and achieve the best results.
