Coach Shin Tae-yong has not stopped being angry about the referee after Indonesia failed in the final of U23 Southeast Asia 2023, and wants the regional football federation to soon apply VAR.

Coach Shin and Indonesia finished second when they lost 5-6 to Vietnam in the penalty shootout of the U23 Southeast Asia final on August 26. After the match, the Korean leader expressed his disappointment in the refereeing work. Two days later, Mr. Shin still mentioned this issue when posting on his personal Instagram page.

Coach Shin shared: "The referee can't see the situation right in front of them because they lack skill or intentionally. This is not the first time that any tournament in Southeast Asia has happened a couple of times. I hope VAR is quickly applied to help regional football develop."

Mr. Shin also posted with this status line a video summarizing six situations where Japanese referee Hiroki Kasahara made a mistake at the recent AFF U23 tournament. The first was the situation where Malaysia was awarded a penalty in the 53rd minute when Fergus Tierney collided with Arel Priyatna, thereby equalizing before defeating Indonesia 2-1 in the group stage.

The remaining five situations are all in the final against Vietnam. In the 32nd minute, the referee thought that Alfeandra Dewagga fouled Vo Hoang Minh Khoa in the penalty area to help Vietnam enjoy a penalty. In the 47th minute, Beckham Putra volleyed the ball to touch Nguyen Minh Quang's hand, which was close, and referee Kasahara did not blow the penalty. In the 74th minute, Ramadhan Sananta was illegally intercepted by Nguyen Ngoc Thang when he counterattacked but escaped the penalty card, before that the Vietnamese midfielder received a yellow card.

In extra time, 109 minutes, referee Kasahara thought that the Indonesian player could be offside in the opportunity to finish. In the 113rd minute, Nguyen Hong Phuc hit Haykal Alhafiz in the head but escaped the penalty card. During the match, Mr. Shin also received a yellow card from the referee for his reaction.

Previously, Mr. Shin had posted a video criticizing the referee and Doan Van Hau after the AFF Cup 2022 semi-final first leg. Three videos were posted showing Van Hau's controversial phases at the tournament and the referee did not sanction.

Coach Shin has been working in Indonesia since 2020 and has not won any titles. The best achievement is the runner-up of the AFF Cup 2020, the bronze medal at the 31st SEA Games. The 52-year-old leader still has the task of bringing Indonesia through the Asian U23 qualifiers 2023 in September, into the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup and the Asian Cup. 2023.
