Besides the fear of losing Varane and Martinez, coach Erik ten Hag said that Man Utd was unlucky when conceding two goals at the end of the Europa League quarter-final first leg against Sevilla.

Man Utd soon led Sevilla two goals after only 21 minutes, thanks to midfielder Marcel Sabitzer. However, the landlord failed to protect the advantage. They let Sevilla shorten the score to 1-2 minutes 84, from left-back Tyrell Malacia's own goal. After Lisandro Martinez was injured in the 86th minute, Man Utd had to play with 10 players because they ran out of substitutions. They paid the price with Harry Maguire's own goal in the 90+3 minute.

"We played short due to Martinez's injury, but the two goals conceded came from really unlucky situations," coach Ten Hag said after the game at Old Trafford. "What can you do? Sometimes you have bad days and are unlucky. This is not our evening."

This match, Raphael Varane had to leave the field at half time due to an unspecified injury. And Martinez left the field in the 86th minute because of a leg problem.

When asked about the risk of losing the main central defender pair in the game against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League this week and the second leg of the Europa League in the middle of next week, coach Erik Ten Hag replied: "Maybe. Martinez will be absent against Nottingham. . We are waiting for more diagnostic results. But I talked to him, he is fine and calm."

Ten Hag also reassured fans that Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw are good alternatives to the aforementioned central defender duo. Before the 2-2 draw with Sevilla, Man Utd lost Marcus Rashford to a muscle injury. When asked about the possibility of the England striker returning for the second leg, Ten Hag replied: "There is a chance, but I cannot confirm it at the moment".

Man Utd are ranked fourth in the Premier League with 56 points from 29 games, three more points and one game less than Tottenham. They need to win Nottingham this weekend to secure the position. Newcastle also have 56 points after 29 games, but ranked third due to having a better difference than Man Utd.

In the second leg next week on Sevilla's field, Ten Hag's teachers and students need to win to reach the semi-finals against Juventus or Sporting.
