Coach Ten Hag: 'Man Utd should have scored three goals'
"It's disappointing. When you score three goals in Munich, you should have won at least one point, but we didn't," Ten Hag said after the match at Allianz Arena on the evening of September 20. "We have to look at ourselves because the goals we lose are too easy."
According to the Dutch military leader, Man Utd played well in the first 25 minutes. He admitted goalkeeper Andre Onana was at fault for the first goal in the 28th minute, but blamed the defenders and midfielders for allowing Leroy Sane to comfortably finish. He also criticized Man Utd's defensive players for letting Jamal Musiala pass while assisting Serge Gnabry to increase the score to 2-0 in the 32nd minute. "Allowing the Bayern players to easily break into the penalty area and absolutely unacceptable," Ten Hag added. "You have to make efforts, sacrifice, and devote all your strength to stop your opponents. Only when we do that will we win again."
The Korean coach also said that similar to the losses to Arsenal and Brighton in the Premier League, Bayern's match took place at a very high level. And to improve, he advised players to create their own luck by playing determinedly. "If you are not determined, you will never achieve it, because no one gives you anything in football," Ten Hag emphasized.
Before this match, Man Utd lost five defenders. Raphael Varane could return against Burnley this weekend, but Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are all injured. Meanwhile, the possibility of Ten Hag letting Harry Maguire play is unclear.
When asked if Man Utd's defensive weakness is related to injury or spirit, Ten Hag replied: "Both. We can only escape this situation if we can solve both of those problems."
After being conceded by Sane and Gnabry in the first half, Man Utd played better and avoided a heavy loss. At the beginning of the second half, Rasmus Hojlund scored the first goal for the "Red Devils", before Harry Kane increased the score to 3-1 for Bayern from the 11m mark. The two teams continued to chase with Casemiro's close-range shot in the 88th minute and Mathys Tel's volley in the 90+2 minute. Minute 90+5, Casemiro headed in from close range to complete a personal double, and shortened the gap to 3-4 for Man Utd.
This is the first time Man Utd has conceded four goals in the Champions League since losing 0-4 to Barca in 1994. In all competitions since the beginning of the season, they have lost four out of six matches. Previously, in the English Premier League, they lost to Tottenham 0-2, Arsenal 1-3 and Brighton 1-3.
After the opening match of Group D of the Champions League, Man Utd is ranked last, while Bayern leads with three points. Copenhagen and Galatasaray ranked second and third, with the same point after holding each other 2-2.
