Dembele reduces salary to stay in Barca
On Twitter, Barca posted a Dembele video to delete the number 2022 on the table, replacing 2024, representing his new contract term.
Dembele became a free player after his old contract expired on June 30. But Xavi persuaded the Barca leadership to keep the French player. After a period of negotiation, the two parties reached an agreement when Dembele decided to reduce 40% of their salary to stay.
Despite the salary reduction, the new Dembele contract has additional bonuses based on his contribution and performance in the next two seasons. If playing well, the 25 -year -old can earn $ 10 million per year.
Dembele was pursued by some clubs after the contract with Barca. In particular, Chelsea is said to be the most zealous, because coach Thomas Tuchel used to work with Dembele in Dortmund. However, the Stamford Bridge team priority Raheem Sterling and the successful recruitment of the former Man City player makes them no longer interested in Dembele. PSG and Bayern are said to be interested in Dembele.
Barca bought Dembele from Dortmund in 2017 with a total cost of up to $ 175 million, making him the second most expensive player in the world after Neymar. However, the contribution of the player born in 1997 is quite limited, mainly because he is often injured.
In the 2021-2022 season, Dembele scored only one goal, contributing 13 assists after 21 appearances in La Liga. He will have to compete with the position with Ansu Fati, Ferran Torres and rookie Raphinha.
