Did Ronaldo receive a League Cup medal?
Man Utd used 28 players in the 2022-2023 Confederation Cup, helping the team escape empty-handed after nearly six years. According to the regulations of the organizers, they will distribute 30 medals to the team that won the Cup. Teams can apply for more medals to give to players, but must be approved by the organizers.
Due to using only 28 players in the League Cup, Man Utd is unlikely to ask for more medals. The players who have competed will all receive medals, and the remaining two medals will be decided by Man Utd.
Only two players have played for Man Utd in other competitions without appearing in the League Cup this season, Ronaldo and 20-year-old midfielder Charlie McNeill. However, according to the British newspaper Manchester Evening News, Man Utd is unlikely to give Ronaldo a medal, when the 38-year-old striker agreed to terminate his contract with the team in November 2022. In January 2023, he joined Al Nassr club in Saudi Arabia on a free basis.
Man Utd will award a medal to goalkeeper Martin Dubravka - who played two games in the League Cup this season. In January 2023, Dubravka returned to the host team Newcastle after his loan contract expired. As a result, he was not allowed to play in the League Cup final. But because Man Utd won the cup with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle at Wembley on the evening of February 26, the Slovakian goalkeeper will receive a medal.
Ronaldo has twice won the English League Cup with Man Utd in 2006 and 2009, in his collection of 34 professional titles. Al Nassr is leading the Saudi League and Ronaldo will have the opportunity to win his first title in Asia later this season.
Ronaldo publicly criticized Man Utd and coach Erik ten Hag in an interview with Piers Morgan in November 2022. That interview brought his future at Old Trafford to an end. Witnessing Ten Hag dancing with the players after winning the League Cup on the evening of February 26, Morgan wrote on Twitter: "Can't believe I'm watching a Man Utd coach and players dance after winning the League Cup. It's shameful."
In England, the League Cup is considered the third most prestigious title after the Premier League and the FA Cup. This tournament is played between 92 professional English clubs, in four divisions. Man Utd played from the third round, and they won all six matches, scoring 16 and conceding only two goals. Striker Marcus Rashford also won the top scorer award with six goals.
