Dutch runner breaks the world's oldest running record
Bol finished in 49.26 seconds, winning gold in the women's 400m at the Dutch Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn. This achievement surpassed the old record of 49.59 seconds set by Czech athlete Jarmila Kratochvilova in March 1982.
Now, this place will go to the record in the 800m outdoor event, also set by Kratochvilova in 1983 with 1 minute 53 seconds 28. "Too fast. Women can't run that fast. So I thought This record will last for a hundred years," said 1996 Olympic champion Svetlana Masterkova.
The oldest record of athletics is in the women's weightlifting event, set by Czech athlete Helena Fibingerova in 1977 with 22.50 m.
"The fans here are the driving force for me to break this record. I have never seen as many spectators as I see here. When I crossed the finish line, I knew I had set the record thanks to the cheers of the crowd. ", Bol said after completing the exam.
Bol used to attend the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, when she won a bronze medal in the women's 400m hurdles after American duo Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad. The 22-year-old runner is a bright young talent of Dutch athletics. She is likely to practice to compete in the women's 400m event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Earlier this year, Bol set the best record in the 500m race (1 minute 5 seconds 63). She is also the fastest 300m hurdler (36.86 seconds). Neither of these events was included in the competition at the Dutch Indoor Championships or the Olympic Games.
Bol's achievement is not enough to break the 400m outdoor record. This is also one of the long-standing records, since the German runner Marita Koch set in 1985 with a time of 47.60 seconds.
