Roger Federer refers to retiring, saying that tennis is not too necessary for his life.

Federer spoke to Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad earlier this week while attending a charity event in Amsterdam. The 40-year-old tennis player accepted leaving tennis to prioritize other aspects of life.

"Tennis is a part of my life, but not the whole of it," Federer said. "I put all my energy into my career. My career can't last forever. I like to win, and if I can't do it again, I'd better stop. I don't think I need tennis anymore."

The Swiss legend says he has found another kind of happiness after nearly three decades of his career. In addition to business, Federer is a tourism ambassador for Switzerland, runs the family's charity and owns a company representing some tennis players. Federer added: "My happiness can come from little things, such as girls getting good grades or boys doing well."

Federer has not played in a year since Wimbledon 2021. Earlier this week, he fell off the ATP scoreboard for the first time in 25 years because he didn't score points. The last Grand Slam "Express" won the championship was the Australian Open in 2018. Federer has only lifted three cup tournaments in Grand Slam events in the past decade, twice at the Australian Open and once at Wimbledon.

Federer believes that a long rest will help him balance his life and fulfill his long-cherished wishes, such as traveling, charity projects, visiting friends and caring for his wife and children. "With my current time, I can do anything I want," Federer said. "In the past, I rarely took my family to tour, and I am experiencing life in a calmer way."

Federer confirmed last month that he will compete in the Basel Open in October. This is an event in my hometown, which Federer has been familiar with since childhood. The 41-year-old previously played in the Porphyra Cup team competition in September.
