Former French striker wants Messi to win the World Cup
* Argentina - France: 10pm today, on MetaSports.
"I kept repeating it emotionally, knowing this would be Messi's last World Cup. He deserves to be the champion," Trezeguet told TyC Sports on December 16. "Messi creates dreams for many people, but that does not make France lose its ambition to defend the gold cup."
Trezeguet was born in Normandy, France but grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina. During his career, he scored 273 goals in 559 matches, and played for many Argentine clubs such as Plateense, River Plate, or Newell's Old Boys. His father is Jorge Trezeguet, a former Argentine defender of French descent.
In the French national shirt, Trezeguet participated in the team's most successful period, with two consecutive titles, the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. In the Euro 2000 final, Trezeguet was a hero when he scored the golden goal, helping "Les Bleus" beat Italy 2-1. But in the 2006 World Cup final with Italy, Trezeguet missed a penalty, causing France to lose 3-5.
Trezeguet admitted to experiencing mixed emotions when witnessing the final between Argentina and France. "This is something I don't want, but this final has to be a great party," the 45-year-old added. "This is the match that fans have been waiting for, considering the quality and history of the two teams. These are the two best teams at the 2022 World Cup."
International media said that the performance of Messi and Kylian Mbappe could decide the final result at Lusail Stadium today. The duo have five goals together, and are competing for the 2022 World Cup championship and two individual titles - Top scorer and best player of the tournament.
"The difference here is age. Messi is at the end of his career, Mbappe is just starting and will set all records. They are the perfect combination at PSG. But Argentina always give their best because Messi", Trezeguet analyzed the confrontation between the two biggest stars of Argentina and France.
Messi is supported by many colleagues, former players, and even opponents to win the gold cup, when asserting that Qatar 2022 is the last World Cup in his career. In it, despite the hostility between Argentina and Brazil, famous players Ronaldo Nazario, Cafu or Rivaldo all think that Messi deserves the championship.
"I would be happy for Messi if he won the World Cup 2022, but not happy when Argentina won the Golden Cup as a Brazilian fan," Ronaldo said. Rivaldo affirmed that God will help Messi in the final against France, and Cafu emphasized: "Why don't I want Messi to win? If not Brazil, I will cheer for Messi."
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, many stars in other fields also supported Messi to win the gold cup, including British singer Adele, actress Julia Roberts, Hollywood star Christopher Mintz-Plasse - who plays McLovin in the film. Superbad, singer Harry Styles - former member of the cult group One Direction, rapper Daddy Yankee and tennis legend Andy Murray.
