Galtier: 'The game would have been different if PSG had opened the scoring'
When the score was 0-0 in the 38th minute, goalkeeper Yann Sommer made a mistake, and Vitinha had a chance to shoot into Bayern's empty goal. However, the Portuguese midfielder shot lightly as a pass. Center-back De Ligt promptly broke the ball near the goal line to save Bayern.
"We were not able to score from our best," coach Galtier said after the second leg lost to Bayern 0-2 on the evening of March 8. "We played very well in the first half, but couldn't materialize it. If we had opened the scoring, the game would have been different."
After missing the opportunity from the opponent's mistake, PSG let the opponent take advantage of his own mistake. From Verratti's loss of the ball in the 61st minute, Leon Goretzka crossed Choupo-Moting to open the scoring for Bayern. After creating the turning point of the match, Bayern played better. In the 89th minute, Serge Gnabry shot down the corner to seal a 2-0 victory. "In the second half we conceded a silly goal," Galtier chided Verratti. "At this level, you need to be more discerning."
Besides two goals, Bayern also succeeded in separating Kylian Mbappe - Lionel Messi duo. The top scorer of the World Cup 2022 has almost no chance to finish the goal of goalkeeper Sommer. Similarly, Messi could not finish before the accompanying effort of Alphonso Davies. Messi's best chance was a corner in the 64th minute, but Sommer pushed a header from close range from Sergio Ramos.
"We had high hopes for the second leg, but we couldn't open the scoring," Galtier added regretfully. "We weren't good enough to win. It was a big disappointment."
In the first leg, PSG lost 0-1. Bayern entered the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 3-0 victory overall. After the defeat to Bayern, PSG only have Ligue 1 left to compete for the rest of the 2022-2023 season. This poses the risk of being fired for Galtier, who has led PSG since the summer of 2022.
When asked about the future, the former Lille coach replied: "It's too early to talk about that. I'm still focused on the end of the season with a lot of energy and determination."
PSG currently leads Ligue 1 with 63 points from 26 matches. They are eight points ahead of second place Marseille and third place Monaco by 12 points. In the French Cup, PSG lost to Marseille 1-2 in the round of 16.
