Giroud: 'Mbappe will soon catch my record'
In the 3-1 win over Poland in the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup, Giroud contributed the opening goal. This is the 52nd goal of the 36-year-old striker for France, helping him surpass Thierry Henry, who monopolizes the scoring record for the team.
Mbappe, after a brace against Poland, now has 33 goals, ranking seventh in the list of players with the most goals for France.
When asked if Mbappe can catch the record, Giroud laughed and replied: "Don't worry, Mbappe will soon catch my record. Just in the World Cup alone, he has 9 goals. We still have 9 goals. What more can I say?".
Mbappe has been playing for France since 2017, when he was only 18 years old. After 5 years, the striker has contributed 33 goals in 63 games, reaching a rate of 0.52 goals per game. Giroud's ratio is 0.44.
In the 2018 World Cup, Mbappe has four goals. At the ongoing World Cup in Qatar, the 23-year-old striker scored 5 goals. This achievement can be further increased when France plays in the quarter-finals with England, or go deeper.
Former Germany international Miroslav Klose holds the record for scoring at the World Cup with 16 goals. With Mbappe able to attend about three more tournaments, it is considered possible for him to catch up or break Klose's record.
"I hope Mbappe will break many records and we will continue to praise him," Giroud added.
