Goalkeeper Onana divided the case of shouting at Maguire
A few minutes after replacing Tom Heaton in a friendly match against Dortmund on the evening of July 30, Onana faced a dangerous situation. Maguire passed the error towards Christian Eriksen, creating conditions for Dortmund to counterattack.
Onana corrected his teammates when he blocked Sebastian Haller's close-range shot, while Karim Adeyemi kicked off the post. Right after that, the Cameroon goalkeeper aggressively ran towards Maguire and harshly criticized the former Man Utd captain. Maguire didn't reply, just turned and left.
After the match, Onana performed differently. He praised Maguire as a class player, good ball control, once the captain of Man Utd and has a good relationship with the English midfielder. But the loyal goalkeeper also wants his teammates to be ready because he is always strict every time he plays.
"We have to be strict with ourselves," the 27-year-old goalkeeper told MUTV. "I told myself to always try because mistakes will happen. We are not afraid to make mistakes because it is a part of life, and we all learn from mistakes. But if we want to win titles "We have to ask for more from each other. It's an honor to play for Man Utd, Maguire is a top player and we will continue."
Onana emphasized not only asking more from Maguire, but also all Man Utd players because they also demand a lot and trust him. The Cameroon goalkeeper explained: "They pass the ball to me a lot, so I have to give them confidence, and I want my teammates to pass it to me to give me confidence."
Onana grew up from the Barca training camp, so he is highly appreciated for his ability to use his feet to play. He played for Ajax from 2016 to 2022 before joining Inter as a free agent. Here, he and Inter won two titles, and reached the Champions League final - where they lost to Man City. This summer, Onana joined Man Utd for 62 million USD, replacing David de Gea.
In the last friendly match in the US, coach Erik ten Hag gave the opportunity to all 22 players to play. Man Utd opened the scoring in the 24th minute from the heart of defender Diogo Dalot. However, the defense continued to make mistakes that caused them to concede two goals in the last two minutes of the first half. Antony equalized 2-2 early in the second half, but defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka dangerously missed leading to Youssoufa Moukoko's decisive goal.
This is Man Utd's third consecutive defeat in the US tour, after losing 1-3 to Wrexham and Real Madrid 0-2. In particular, in the defeat to Wrexham, Man Utd only used young players, no one in the main squad.
Man Utd have two friendlies left with Lens at Old Trafford on August 5 and Athletic Bilbao in Dublin, Republic of Ireland on August 6. Man Utd will open the Premier League season 2023-2024 by welcoming Wolves on the evening of August 14.
