Goalkeeper retires from national team after being kicked out of World Cup

"After hours of non-stop training, endless travels and a lot of perseverance, I can proudly say that I have fulfilled my great dream. But every story, no matter how beautiful, is must end. And my story with the Cameroon national team is over," Onana announced on Twitter on December 23.

At the 2022 World Cup, Onana played the opening match against Switzerland 0-1. After that, the 26-year-old goalkeeper was sent home due to a disagreement over how to play with coach Rigobert Song. A video shows Onana crying after being fired, while Song is talking to a member of the coaching staff.

According to Onana, Coach Song was not ready to solve the problems. However, he respects and supports the decision of those "responsible for pursuing success for the team and the country".

Onana also promised to continue to support: "Cameroon is eternal and so is my love for the national team and the people who always support us. My feelings will never change. Human heart My Cameroon will continue to beat and wherever I go, I will always fight to raise the Cameroon flag as high as possible."

After the opening match of the World Cup 2022, goalkeeper Devis Epassy caught the remaining two matches of Cameroon. They drew with Serbia 3-3 and beat Brazil 1-0.

Cameroon finished Group G World Cup 2022 with four points and third place, two points behind Brazil and Switzerland. Serbia finished last with one point. This is the seventh time Cameroon has bid farewell to the World Cup in the group stage, in eight appearances. They reached the quarterfinals in 1990.

Onana played for six years for Ajax club, playing 214 matches. The 26-year-old goalkeeper has won three Dutch championships, two Dutch Cups, one Europa League final and one Champions League semi-final. From the season 2022-2023, Onana plays for Inter Milan.
