Golden State Warriors coach joins Steve Nash to become owner of La Liga club
Real Mallorca football club announced that Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr will join the owner group of the team playing in La Liga.
Kerr's exact stake in the Spanish club was not disclosed. Nor is he the only NBA coach to join Mallorca's ownership group. Steve Nash has been here since 2019.
But the veteran Canadian defender was not the inspiration that brought Kerr to the sport of kings. The captain of the American basketball team is a close friend of Andy Kohlberg, the new president of Real Mallorca.
It's been a very busy time for Kohlberg. Almost at the same time as closing the application to become the majority holder of Mallorca shares, he also added himself to the Phoenix Suns basketball team in the NBA and the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA.
"Andy Kohlberg and I have been good friends for many years," Kerr told Mallorca's media team. "We talked to each other this summer. He told me there was a change in the ownership group and gave me the opportunity to be part of a new investment group."
"I was so excited when I went to Mallorca last summer to watch a game, watch the team and become a fan. It was a really exciting opportunity and I took it."
Kerr is set to enter his 10th season with the Golden State Warriors this fall. He has 4 championship rings with the Gulf team, after winning 5 times as a player in Chicago and San Antonio.
Kerr currently leads the US basketball team at the FIBA World Cup. The former champion is in the same group with New Zealand, Greece and Jordan
Mallorca has just started their third season in La Liga, after finishing in 9th place last season. They drew with Las Palmas and lost to Villarreal in the first two rounds of the new season.
Coach Steve Kerr wants to focus fully on the FIBA World Cup, but promises to book tickets to the beautiful Spanish island after the tournament ends.
"This is not just a financial decision. I will give more enthusiasm to this club and will watch La Liga matches more closely."
