Golf Vietnam has identified 7 players to attend the Asian Games
The upcoming Asian Games organizers stipulate that each golf team has four men and three women. According to this structure, VGA opened a round of stroke play through three rounds of par72 at Vinpearl Golf Nam Hoi An at the beginning of July to determine the top two positions of each gender in the national team. Despite calling the army nationwide, amateur and professional, only 28 men and eight women registered to apply.
In the real battle, the men's branch again recorded 11 players giving up at the end of the second round while the whole women's group completed the program.
In the men's group, Nguyen Nhat Long finished first with a score of -7, Nguyen Dang Minh came in second thanks to defeating Nguyen Anh Minh in the playoff after both were -2 after the standard point race. The women's group ended with the first place belonging to Le Chuc An with a score of +2, Ngo Bao Nghi beat Ngo Vinh Hoa in the play-offs to take second place.
According to this result, VGA determined the first 4 places in the golf team going to Hangzhou, China to attend the Asian Games, including Nhat Long, Dang Minh, Chuc An, and Bao Nghi.
On July 20, the training board announced more Nguyen Anh Minh, Le Khanh Hung and Doan Xuan Khue Minh. These three places are determined by a set of criteria: the world amateur rankings, the recent 2023 National Amateur Championship results and the achievements at the major tournaments in the first half of 2023.
Considering the whole team, only Bao Nghi is professional, the rest are amateurs. Particularly, the men's group with three members made a miracle for Vietnam golf in the history of the SEA Games in May. At that time, Khanh Hung won the gold medal, Anh Minh took the individual bronze medal, then collaborated with Dang Minh to bring it back. Team silver medal, in addition to support from Doan Uy.
The rules of golf competition at this year's Asian Games have been opened to the pro level, with a maximum of two men and one woman per team. Previously, from the most recent period - Jakarta 2018 - back to the 1982 debut year, the golf course of the tournament was only for amateurs.
The congress in Jakarta four years ago recorded host Indonesia, Korea, Japan, Singapore complaining Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Macau and Uzbekistan to bring professional golfers into the competition. However, the specialized sports court in Switzerland concluded that the defendant group did not violate the rules.
This year's Asian Games is the 19th in its history, taking place in Hangzhou China. The congress was postponed from 2022 to this year due to the impact of Covid-19.
