Haaland gets mad while watching the World Cup
Haaland did not attend the 2022 World Cup, because the Norwegian team failed in the qualifying round. Meanwhile, most of the other Man City stars went to Qatar. Substitute striker Julian Alvarez even scored four goals and won the championship with Argentina.
"At home, I'm a bit angry because I can't attend the World Cup," Haaland admitted after the match against Leeds in the 17th round of the Premier League on the evening of December 28. "Watching other players score makes me excited and irritated."
The striker who is leading the Premier League top scorer race also thinks that not being able to attend the World Cup is giving more motivation to score. He has determined a target number for this season, but does not want to share.
In the match against Leeds, Haaland scored twice in the 51st and 64th minutes. Along with Rodri's goal in the 45+1 minute, the Norwegian striker helped Man City win 3-1. According to Haaland, he could have scored five goals. However, it is important that Man City win and continue to chase Arsenal. "I'm really happy. I could have scored more goals, but that's life. What can I do? I will practice more," Haaland affirmed.
Haaland currently owns 20 Premier League goals in 14 matches. He became the fastest player to reach this number, breaking Kevin Phillips' old record of 20 goals in 21 games in the 1999-2000 season. This is also Haaland's sixth record since joining Man City.
After the victory over Leeds, Man City returned to second place in the Premier League. They have 35 points from 15 games, five points behind Arsenal. Newcastle are ranked third, with 33 points after 16 games.
The match against Leeds is also a special reunion of the Haaland family. His father, Alfie, played for Leeds from 1997 to 2000. Haaland himself was born in Leeds in July 2000. In the match last night, Haaland's father and mother were present. "It was a really special moment. The fact that I scored for Man City against Leeds was just in my wildest imagination," Haaland said.
In 20 matches played for Man City from the beginning of the 2022-20023 season in all competitions, Haaland contributed 26 goals. He is leading the Premier League top scorer race with 20 goals, seven goals more than second-placed Harry Kane. One of the two top scorers last season, Mohamed Salah has only seven goals.
