Italy England manager Gareth Southgate is hoping to win on Italy's field for the first time since 1961, when the two teams were preparing to face off in Euro 2024 qualifying.

"It doesn't matter what England have done in the past, because we have to be humble and start over," Southgate said in a press conference on March 22. "We need to know how to win against strong opponents. England have already done that, but we need to do it more often."

Southgate also pointed to statistics that England have not won in Italy since 1961, when Jimmy Greaves scored the decisive goal to help the visitors win 3-2. "We have to destroy this history," he added. "The players are confident enough to do that, because we are all playing at the highest level."

England are in Group C with Italy, Ukraine, North Macedonia and Malta in qualifying for Euro 2024. They played their opening match at Diego Armando Maradona in Napoli, against the defending champions. Italy won England in the penalty shootout Euro 2021 at Wembley, when Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho all did not kick in.

Rashford withdrew from the gathering this time due to injury, and Jack Grealish lit the main door on the left wing. Southgate is likely to use midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the middle of the field, even though he is only a substitute at Man City. The two remaining midfielders will start for the visitors, almost Declan Rice, and Jude Bellingham.

Italy also lacks center back Leonardo Bonucci, midfielder Federico Dimarco and striker Federico Chiesa, as these three players withdraw from the team due to injury. Roberto Mancini's side have changed a lot since winning the Euros, when only five players retained their official place compared to the final against England, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Giovanni Di Lornezo, Jorginho, Nicolo Barrella and Marco Verratti.

Striker Harry Kane needs one more goal to become the highest scorer in England history, surpassing Wayne Rooney. According to Southgate, Kane is determined to break the record right in Italy. "But what he contributes to England is not only in the goals," he added.
