Inter hits rare milestone in Serie A
At the Sardegna Arena, Inter had the upper hand when controlling the ball 67%, finishing 17 times with three shots on target, compared to 12 and 2 for Cagliari. In the 14th minute, Lautaro Martinez threatened the home goal with a left-foot volley that hit the column.
Inter did not have to regret it for too long when they passed seven minutes later. Rookie Marcus Thuram went outside the box and then poked a gap to let Denzel Dumfries cross down to finish a diagonal touch outside the reach of goalkeeper Boris Radunovic. Marcus Thuram's first assist in Serie A, 17 years 282 days after his father Lilian Thuram's last assist in the tournament - the pass for David Trezeguet's goal against AS Roma on November 19, 2005.
Inter decided the match in the 30th minute, when Martinez received a pass from Federico Dimarco, made a gesture to eliminate two Cagliari players and then finished in the near corner, sealing a 2-0 victory. The Argentina striker rose to the top of the top scorer list with three goals, equal to Olivier Giroud and Victor Osimhen, after scoring twice in the opening match against Monza 2-0 at home.
For the first time in history, Inter won both of their Serie A opening matches in five consecutive seasons. Their achievements four seasons ago were third place in the 2022-2023 season, second in the 2021-2022 season, champion in the 2020-2021 season and second in the 2019-2020 season.
Inter is one of four teams keeping a winning streak in Serie A this season, alongside Verona, AC Milan and defending champion Napoli. In the next round on September 3, Inter returned home to Fiorentina.
This summer, Inter parted ways with many pillars such as Romelu Lukaku, Edin Dzeko, Andre Onana, Milan Skriniar and recruited Thuram, Alexis Sanchez, Yann Sommer, Juan Cuadrado and most likely Benjamin Pavard from Bayern.
After the win against Cagliari, when asked if the squad this season is stronger than last season, coach Simone Inzaghi replied: "That's what we hope. The club has parted many important players, changed 10 members. in the team but Inter is still an organized team with tactical principles. Those are good signs for a coach."
