Inter is still wary despite having the advantage in the Champions League
According to coach Inzaghi, the match is not over yet and Benfica still has the opportunity to reverse the situation in the second leg. He said: "Everything was difficult today. The difference is that we have a goal, they don't. The team needs to focus on next week's game, when Benfica must definitely attack to score."
At the Estadio do Sport Lisboa, Benfica was better when holding the ball 58% of the time, finishing 12 times and creating four dangerous chances. But Inter won by two goals by taking advantage of better opportunities. Midfielder Nicolo Barella opened the scoring early in the second half, before Lukaku scored a penalty to help Inter win two goals.
According to coach Inzaghi, Inter is facing a tight schedule, which can make the players unable to regain their fitness. Striker Lukaku also thinks that Inter needs to keep fit in the end of the season. He said: "I've just been recovering from an injury for five months. The best way to reach your goals at the end of the season is to show all you have in these kinds of games."
Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who played the full 90 minutes against Benfica, believed that the Italian representative had just played the best game of the season. The former Man Utd star said: "Inter deserved to win. But this is just the beginning and we need to get the job done next week. You don't always have a Champions League night like this. The whole team played. give your best in front of an unpleasant opponent."
Inter have played well in the Champions League and some big games this season, but their form has not been consistent in Serie A. They are outside the top 4 with one point behind Milan. When asked about this, Mkhitaryan said: "Myself and my teammates ask each other the same. It's confusing."
Inter kept a clean sheet against Benfica with great merit from goalkeeper Andre Onana. According to player Cameron, playing fearlessly helped Inter win. He said: "Benfica are an excellent team but we did a good job. It would be a mistake to think about the semi-finals. We need to reproduce this performance in the second leg."
Onana has caught all nine of Inter's matches in the Champions League this season. He hasn't conceded a goal since the knockout round. If they overcome Benfica, Inter will meet one of two compatriots, Milan or Napoli in the semi-finals.
