Jon Rahm breaks through at major The Open 2023
Yesterday, Rahm scored eight birdies and no bogey, which is 63 strokes. This is his personal record in 18 holes through 29 major quartet battles - including 13 The Open. Thanks to that, Rahm climbed from T41 at +2 after round 2 to third with -6 at the end of round 3.
The Open 2023 cut line is at +3, according to the principle of taking the top or T70. Rahm is one notch above the filter score by bogey last round 2 - par5 18 hole. Here, he entered the green on his third shot, about 10.6 meters from the hole. After the first put, Rahm was less than a meter from the target but then needed two strokes.
However, the Spaniard still kept the second round score at negative (-1). This result was significantly better than the +3 in the first leg - where he also bogey the last hole due to a bunker in front of the green and had to get out in the opposite direction of the flag. The opening day performance, especially the closing point, made Rahm unhappy and cursed at the group of TV reporters at the end of the match.
"When I was leaving the 18th hole and was trying to figure out how to forget the moment of my mistake on the 18th hole, I was pushed by the TV guys to run after Rory McIlroy. It was disrespectful," Rahm explained to Golfweek.
At the major PGA Championship in May, Rahm also yelled at an ESPN cameraman when he tried to get close to him to see him preparing to free the ball from the thick, high rough grass to the right of the 8th hole fairway, round 3. "Don't point the lens at my face when I'm mad. Give me some space to work," he said at the time.
The Open 2023 will close the curtain on the evening of July 23. Rahm will enter the fourth round with a score of -6, six strokes behind lead Brian Harman and just below second place - Cameron Young (-7).
Rahm is 28 years old, has won 11 cups on the PGA Tour, including both majors - Masters in April and US Open 2021. He accumulated 52 weeks to hold the top of the world professional golf table (OWGR), this week ranked third.
