Juventus is returned 15 points in Serie A
The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) proposed Serie A return 15 points to Juventus on the evening of April 20, after a three-hour hearing. Max Allegri's teachers and students therefore jumped five places to third place with 59 points, pushing Roma down to fourth. The race to the top 4 is even more fierce when Milan and Inter are in danger of participating in the Europa League next season, even though they have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League this season.
In January 2023, the Italian Football Association (FIGC) decided to deduct 15 points from Juventus due to accounting, financial reporting, and market manipulation violations. Earlier, an Italian court accused Juventus of exaggerating transfer fees between players and other Italian clubs between 2019 and 2021 in order to evade taxes. They also falsely reported losses and used false transfer profits to evade the Financial Fairness Act (FFP).
The prosecutor only proposed a penalty of nine points, so the FIGC's decision to deduct 15 points was controversial. Juventus decided to appeal.
During the hearing on April 19, the FIGC did not present any evidence. CONI prosecutor Ugo Taucer said that the FIGC's decision "has no clear basis and requires a new ruling for Juventus". Pending a new ruling, "Old Lady" will be returned 15 points.
Juventus' lawyers want to annul the entire judgment and stop the matter here. However, CONI wants the court to start the investigation from the beginning, and more teams will be questioned.
A new court ruling is expected in a month or so. Therefore, the penalty, if any, will only apply to Juventus next season.
CONI also canceled the ban from participating in football activities with Juventus leaders including Pavel Nedved, Paolo Galimberti, Assia Grazzioli-Venier, Caitlin Mary Hughes, Daniela Marilungo and Francesco Roncaglio. However, the bans for Andrea Agnelli, Maurizio Arrivabene, Federico Cherubini and Fabio Paratici remain in place.
CONI's decision is perhaps not surprising to coach Jose Mourinho. On April 9, he said: "Is Roma third? Isn't Juventus 59 points? We are in Italy."
In the next match, Juventus played at home against the top team Napoli on the evening of April 23.
