Kimmich: 'Bayern gave too many chances to Man City'

Midfielder Joshua Kimmich and teammates admitted that Bayern made many unnecessary mistakes in the quarter-final first leg loss to Man City 0-3 in the Champions League.

"This result is bitter," Kimmich said after the defeat at the Etihad Stadium on the evening of April 11. "We gave our opponents a chance from mistakes we never made."

According to the German midfielder, Bayern played well for about 60 minutes, but let things deteriorate from the second goal. Midfielder Dayot Upamecano dribbled to lose the ball, leading to Erling Haaland's cross for Bernardo Silva to head into the net of goalkeeper Yann Sommer. "At this level, of course that mistake will be punished," Kimmich admitted. "Then we are too vulnerable and make more mistakes."

However, Kimmich still believes in the ability of Bayern to come back, when the two teams meet in the second leg at the Allianz home ground on April 19.

Meanwhile, old general Thomas Muller regrets missed opportunities in front of Man City goal. One of them was Jamal Musiala's shot, which was blocked by center-back Ruben Dias in front of the goal line despite the open goal. "Man City took the lead from a great long shot. Then we made a personal mistake. It hurt the team and the game was over within 15 minutes," he added.

Another German player, midfielder Leon Goretzka, thinks that Bayern is one of the rare teams to overwhelm Man City at the Etihad Stadium. They did that for most of the first half and almost the first half of the second. "But a personal mistake set us off course," admitted Goretzka. "We need to learn our lesson and stand up."

This match, Bayern controlled the ball 54%, but shot seven times - half as much as Man City. They let the hosts take the lead with Rodri's brilliant long shot into the top corner in the 27th minute. In the 70th minute, while his teammates on the front line were trying to succeed, central defender Upamecano made a mistake for Man City to double the gap. Six minutes later, Bayern's defense once again lacked clarity, seeing John Stones head the ball for Erling Haaland to seal the 3-0 victory.

In the second leg at home, Bayern need to win by at least three goals. Their current coach, Thomas Tuchel, once led Chelsea to defeat Man City 1-0 in the Champions League final 2021. The winner of this match will advance to the semi-finals against Real or Chelsea.
