Klopp: 'Liverpool couldn't have played worse in the first half'

Coach Jurgen Klopp admitted that Liverpool played very poorly, before transforming in the second half to defeat host Wolves in round five of the Premier League.

In the first half, Liverpool scored five times, while Wolves had eight chances. However, the home team only scored one goal, missing many good situations. In the second half alone, the away team finished 11 times, compared to Wolves' three chances. Klopp's army also took advantage of the opportunity to score three goals thanks to Cody Gakpo, Andy Robertson and an own goal from Hugo Bueno.

Klopp said that because the team's matches ended not long ago, he had to hesitate when choosing a starting player. "I made the most imperfect choice, and we couldn't have played any worse in the first half, but fortunately it's over," the German coach said. "Therefore, Liverpool had to change almost everything in the second half, from tactics to physicality."

At the beginning of the second half, Klopp brought in winger Luis Diaz to replace Alexis Mac Allister, when the Argentine player was not in his best condition. Immediately after Gakpo equalized, Liverpool also replaced two more people and the Dutch striker himself was taken off the field.

In the first half, Allister failed many passes allowing Wolves to counterattack, and also received an early yellow card. Klopp explained that in the middle of the week he had to use an oxygen mask, when Argentina met Bolivia in the city of La Paz, about 3,500 m above sea level. "Allister was exhausted, so he was not disappointed when he was replaced, but relieved," the 56-year-old coach added.

In Liverpool's four wins this season, three times they were behind. On the one hand, Klopp praised the players' will, but on the other hand, said that the team is still unstable. "How can we play stably when we have to change so many starting positions," he said. "Winning back-to-back is very useful in a long season, but we shouldn't fall into that situation too much."

In the near future, Liverpool as well as other strong teams in England will have to play two matches per week, when the European Cups and Federation Cups start. In the next match, Liverpool will be away at LASK in Austria on the evening of September 21.
