Myanmar was penalized in the 90th minute, but Malaysia still secured a 1-0 victory over host Myanmar in the opening match of Group B AFF Cup on the afternoon of December 21.

The confrontation at Thuwunna Stadium, Yangon today is important for both teams, because whoever wins will have the opportunity to compete for tickets to the semi-finals with Vietnam and Singapore. Malaysia is in better form, winning four of the last five matches, including defeating Thailand in the 2022 King's Cup semi-final.

On the contrary, because they have just lost four of the last five matches, the host Myanmar is undervalued despite winning Malaysia 1-0 in the AFF Cup 2016.

The two teams struggled throughout the first half. Although there were many stoppages, clear opportunities did not come to the strikers of both teams. Myanmar controlled the opponent better in the first half and created two chances, but striker Aung Kaung Mann both ended incorrectly.

The first half was goalless, but the fast, aggressive play caused some players pain. In which, Myanmar captain Mg Mg Lwin and Malaysia defender Khuzaimi Piee were injured and had to leave the field early.

After the break, Malaysia has some personnel changes and the results come soon to them. In the 52nd minute, after a quick counterattack, despite being surrounded by the host's defenders, Rasid flicked his cheek outside to poke a slot to let Faisal Halim escape to defeat the Myanmar goalkeeper in a face-to-face position, opening the score.

The host attacked after the goal conceded, continuously besieging the goal, but could not penetrate the Malaysian defense. Myanmar switched to a long shot and almost succeeded with a cannon shot from defender Kyaw Min Oo's 35-meter distance in the 71st minute. The ball lurched and dangerous, but the Malaysian goalkeeper was able to push the bar over the bar. 2 minutes later, it was Ye Yint Aung's turn to shoot from outside the box, but the ball missed the goal.

Under the pressure of the host, Malaysia clustered defensively with the majority and waited for the opportunity to counterattack. They therefore launched naturalized midfielder Sergio Aguero into the field in the 75th minute to take advantage of the speed of the Argentinian player. But when Aguero has not shown ability, Malaysia is penalized.

90 minutes, after the mess, the referee did not observe in time, but the line referee determined that the Malaysian player let the ball touch his hand in the penalty area. Myanmar thus received a penalty despite the reaction from the Malaysian player. But from the 11m mark, the substitute striker Win Naing Tun shot too lightly for the Malaysian goalkeeper to push out.

Although the match had eight minutes of compensation, all subsequent efforts of the home players did not bring results, causing them to accept a 0-1 defeat.

In the next turn on December 24, Myanmar is a guest in Singapore, and Malaysia is home to Laos.
