Man City take the top of the table from Arsenal
Arsenal have lost 11 consecutive games to Man City in the Premier League, and this time they have paid the price for the defeat by being at the top of the table. Attacking stars like Kevin de Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland scored for the away team respectively, while the home side only managed to remove one goal thanks to Bukayo Saka's strike from the penalty spot.
Arsenal received bad news right before the match, when midfielder Thomas Partey suffered a back injury and could not play. Instead, coach Mikel Arteta used the best player in UEFA 2021 Jorginho, helping the host's control of the ball not be affected much.
Arsenal entered the game better, but Man City opened the scoring in the 24th minute, from the mistake of Japanese defender Takehiro Tomiyasu. Due to pressure from Jack Grealish from behind, Tomiyasu's return was underpowered and was cut by De Bruyne. The Belgian midfielder shot right over the head of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, sending the ball slowly into the net.
The goal did not make Arsenal flinch as they calmly deployed the ball to find an equalizer. In the 39th minute, midfielder Granit Xhaka kicked the ball into the armpit of Man City's defense for striker Eddie Nketiah to plunge to the left of the penalty area. He managed to shoot before being rushed by goalkeeper Ederson, causing referee Anthony Taylor to blow the away team's penalty. The referee's decision was controversial as Ederson did not appear to have done it on purpose, but he had the effect of causing Nketiah to fall.
Before the penalty kick, Ederson repeatedly pointed to his right, and Saka shot in that direction, but the Brazilian goalkeeper fell in the opposite direction and could not save.
