Mbappe won the World Cup's top scorer award in 2022
Mbappe scored in the opening match against Australia 4-1, then scored twice in the second match against Denmark. In the 1/8 round, he continued to score a brace against Poland and created the other goal for Olivier Giroud. The 23-year-old striker failed to score in the semi-finals, but his shot led to both goals for France against Morocco. In the final against Argentina on the evening of December 18, Mbappe scored a hat-trick against the best goalkeeper of the tournament, Emiliano Martinez.
Eight goals helped Mbappe become the second World Cup top scorer in French history, after Just Fontaine with 13 goals in 1958. However, France did not win in both these periods. France finished only three in 1958, and were runners-up in the 2022 World Cup. They drew Argentina 3-3 after 120 minutes, but lost 2-4 in the penalty shootout.
Mbappe is also the player who has scored the most goals in a World Cup since Ronaldo for Brazil in 2002, with eight goals. Ronaldo is also the nearest top scorer belonging to a championship team. The last owner of the World Cup Golden Shoe to score more goals than Mbappe was Gerd Muller in 1970, with 10 goals.
Mbappe even took the first penalty and succeeded, but France still lost to Argentina 2-4. The 23-year-old striker did everything but could not help the home team defend the championship like Italy in 1938 or Brazil in 1962. After the match, French President Emmanuel Macron went down to the place to encourage Mbappe.
Messi finished second in the Golden Shoe race with seven goals, but enjoyed the joy of winning his first career championship with Argentina at the World Cup. Mbappe and Mbappe are far behind the two players behind Julian Alvarez and Olivier Giroud with four goals.
This is also the sixth top scorer title in Mbappe's career. He has won the Ligue 1 Golden Shoe four times in the last four seasons, and the top scorer of the UEFA Nations League final 2021.
At the 2018 World Cup, Mbappe received the Best Young Player award with four goals, helping France win the second title. He has scored a total of 12 goals in tournament history, just five more to break Miroslav Klose's all-time record.
