Medvedev achieves rare feat in tennis
Medvedev did not have many difficulties when he fought his compatriot Andrey Rublev in the championship match on the evening of March 4. Thanks to a 73% one-to-one serve rate, Medvedev faced no break-points. He won four games of catching the ball, before beating Rublev 6-2, 6-2 in just 68 minutes.
Medvedev is the fourth person since 2011 to win three awards in three consecutive weeks. The three people before him to do this are Andy Murray (Bangkok, Tokyo and Shanghai, 2011), Casper Ruud (Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel, 2021) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (Florence, Antwerp and Basel, 2022).
17 of Medvedev's 18 titles have been on hard courts. He is on top of wins this season (19 games) and will be number six in the world when the ATP scorecards update next week. Medvedev is also in the top three players with the least loss, with two losses like Stefanos Tsitsipas, one more than Novak Djokovic.
"This is shocking because obviously I didn't start the season well with two consecutive defeats in Australia," Medvedev said as he accepted the Dubai Championships title. "I hope to continue this form in the next tournaments. I don't want to stop."
Medvedev's winning streak and championship run could be extended when he attends the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells on March 8. The Russian tennis player is less charming with this tournament when he has not reached the quarterfinals, although the last two years have been ranked top seeds.
Medvedev won the Masters 1000 four times in six finals. The last time he won this system was the Canadian Open 2021.
