Canada Two-seeded Daniil Medvedev entered the third round of the Masters 1000 event in Toronto after defeating Matteo Arnaldi 6-2, 7-5 on August 9.

Medvedev won the Rogers Cup 2021, raising the winning and losing record in the tournament to 8-1. The Russian tennis player was comfortable returning to the hard court, after reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon last month.

"The summer weather in the US is quite hot but I have to get used to it," Medvedev said after the game. "I was quite tired in the second set and needed more time to adjust. Hopefully in two, three days everything will be fine."

Medvedev saved three break-points in the match thanks to a good serve, in addition to 29 winners. He closes the win after an hour and 26 minutes and will meet Lorenzo Musetti in the third round.

The 27-year-old tennis player has won 47 matches since the beginning of the year, winning five titles. He is only one cup behind this season's most champion, Carlos Alcaraz. In addition to the minors, Medvedev won two Masters 1000s in Miami and Rome to finish third in the race for tickets to the year-end ATP Finals.

In the late match on August 9, young talent Holger Rune unexpectedly lost 2-6, 6-4, 3-6 to Marcos Giron. The Dane became the next high seed after Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Frances Tiafoe, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Cameron Norrie and Alexander Zverev left early.

The pre-match rune said he didn't want to waste his potential and set his sights on being number one in the world. However, the ATP sixth-placed player played erratically against the 70th-ranked opponent. The 20-year-old served badly with 12 double errors, scoring from a first serve of 63%, far behind Giron's 79%. The talent born in 2003 also made 28 self-defeating errors in this match.

Rune in four of the top 10 men's singles seeds in this year's Rogers Cup bounced after the first two rounds. Half of the 16 all-seeds left the game, suggesting that Toronto's hardcourt event was unpredictable. The two biggest championship candidates, Carlos Alcaraz and Medvedev, also experienced difficult matches against less-underrated opponents.
