Medvedev praised Djokovic's character
"When we first met, I was ranked 500th in the world," Medvedev said after losing to Djokovic in the US Open final on the evening of September 10. "He was very kind to me, which surprised me. He's still the same now, even though he's won 24 Grand Slams. Nothing has changed. That's a great thing to say about a person." .
Medvedev reached the Grand Slam finals five times, but lost four. The only time he was crowned was in New York in 2021, when the Russian defeated Djokovic in three sets, preventing him from reaching the Calendar Slam (achievement of winning four Grand Slams in the same year). In the remaining four Grand Slam finals, Medvedev lost twice to Djokovic and twice to Rafael Nadal.
"Defeating Djokovic in the Grand Slam final is the pinnacle of my career," Medvedev continued. "If Djokovic or Nadal didn't exist, I might have won more championships. But obviously, Djokovic pushed me to be better."
Medvedev faced Djokovic 15 times and lost 10 of them. After the 2023 US Open final, Djokovic commented that Medvedev is a person with personality, and advised his junior to continue to maintain a straightforward style on and off the court.
On the newly updated ATP scoreboard, Djokovic returned to number one in the world and Medvedev is still ranked third, but only 1,255 points behind Carlos Alcaraz. The race for number one position at the end of the year will take place in a tiebreaker, with the three names mentioned above.
Medvedev won 55 and lost 12 matches in 2023, including 38 wins on hard courts. No one has won as many hard court matches as Medvedev since the beginning of the year. The Russian tennis player won five titles, including two Masters 1000 in Miami and Rome. Medvedev, Djokovic and Alcaraz are sure to qualify for the ATP Finals in November.
