Messi won the best award almost twice as much as Ronaldo
According to Sport Bible statistics, since 2009, the Argentine star has won this individual title 306 times, accounting for 52% of the total number of matches he played. Behind Messi is "great rival" Cristiano Ronaldo with 175 times being voted the best player of the match, accounting for 30% of the matches played in the past 13 years.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic ranked third with 116 games honored, accounting for 25% of the total number of matches. The remaining two positions in the top 5 respectively belong to Eden Hazard (100 times voted as the best player of the match, accounting for 25% of the total number of matches) and Neymar (87 times - 28 times).
At the 2022 World Cup, Messi is also the most voted player of the match with the past four times, when he met Mexico, Poland in the group stage, the Netherlands in the quarter-finals and Croatia in the semi-finals. Behind is Kylian Mbappe with three honors. Ronaldo only received the award once, when Portugal beat Ghana 3-2 in the opening match.
In World Cup history, Messi also received this award the most with 10 times, far ahead of Ronaldo (7) and Arjen Robben (6).
In the semi-final victory over Croatia 3-0 on December 13, Messi took the penalty kick to open the scoring and then assist Julian Alvarez to set the result, thereby setting a series of records at the highest pitch in world football. The 35-year-old striker still has the opportunity to win another player of the match award, when Argentina meets France in the final at Lusail Stadium on December 18.
Messi currently leads the list of top scorers with 5 goals, equal to Kylian Mbappe, and King of assists with three times, equal to Harry Kane, Bruno Fernandes and Antoine Griezmann.
Playing brilliantly from the beginning of the tournament, Messi brightened the door to win the title of Best Player of the World Cup 2022, even if Argentina lost in the final. In 2014, he also won this award despite losing to Germany in the final.
FIFA's technical research team, led by former manager Arsene Wenger, will compile a list of the best players at the World Cup, combined with votes from the media, to choose the best name.
However, Messi's goal is not individual titles, but to help Argentina win the World Cup for the third time, after 1986 and 1978.
