Mouratoglou: 'Comparing Alcaraz to Big 3 is ridiculous'
In an Instagram post, coach Mouratoglou said that the media is trying to promote Alcaraz's name in the context of the "Big 3" era coming to an end. He wrote: "It is ridiculous to label the Big 3 next to Alcaraz and compare. We are in another era, the Big 3 will never happen again."
According to the French coach, Federer, Nadal and Djokovic - the legends who have reached the 20 Grand Slam milestone - do things that no one else in history has done. Therefore, anyone who has not reached this milestone cannot stand next to the "Big 3".
"Alcaraz appeared, quickly won titles, with two Grand Slams at the age of 20," Mouratoglou praised the young Spanish talent. "The boy is amazing. But comparing him with the three legendary seniors is completely meaningless. Alcaraz has a long way to go to achieve success like them."
Mouratoglou considers Alcaraz's victory over Djokovic in the Wimbledon final to be good for tennis, helping to make Grand Slam less boring in the context that Federer has hung up his racquet and Nadal has a long-term injury. He thinks Alcaraz matured earlier than his 20s, with a spirit of steel shown in key points at last month's Wimbledon final.
"Djokovic as the most successful tennis player in history may have been under extra pressure playing Alcaraz," Mouratoglou said. "There is not much difference between Nole and Alcaraz, except for the mental factor at the decisive moments. It shows that Alcaraz has matured and Djokovic is not a winning machine."
According to Mouratoglou, who has 20 years of coaching top ATP and WTA players, the "Big 3" era could be completely over in two more seasons. Nadal is likely to retire next year, and Djokovic will do so shortly after.
