NBA transfer: Giannis Antetokounmpo suddenly revealed the possibility of leaving the Milwaukee Bucks?
Giannis Antetokounmpo was once one of the most sought-after superstars in basketball. In the past, the Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers have all spent years emptying their payrolls to wait for Giannis. But he decided to stay and win the NBA 2021 with the Milwaukee Bucks.
But the past two seasons have not been smooth for the two-time MVP winner. Milwaukee failed to return to the Finals, even losing to the Miami Heat seed in the first round of last season's Playoffs.
At the end of this season, Antetokounmpo will be eligible for a contract extension. If no agreement is reached, the Greek superstar will become a free agent in 2025. Time for Giannis to think begins to count down.
Basically, if you wait until 2025 to sign the contract, Antetokounmpo will be financially profitable. However, the 28-year-old star insists that numbers are not what holds him back.
"Becoming a winner is the ultimate goal," the Bucks star shared. "Winning championships comes first. I don't want to be with the same team for 20 years without winning another championship."
Antetokounmpo is only 28 years old, there is still plenty of time to continue to compete for the championship. However, the rest of the Bucks may not. Milwaukee decided to keep the pillars that brought back the 2021 championship, but because of that, the squad was aging.
Khris Middleton, the team's No. 2 star is 32 years old and has recently had many injury problems. Jrue Holiday, 33, said he plans to retire when his contract expires. Brook Lopez had back surgery in the 2021/22 season and is no longer in top form at the age of 35.
Bucks are strong enough to compete for the throne in the last 2 years of the Greek demigod's contract. However, Milwaukee's best players are aging rapidly. It's not easy to rejuvenate the force right now, when they don't even have a 1st round pick until 2028.
If Antetokounmpo's goal is to compete for the championship in the future, destinations outside of Milwaukee will be more attractive. Now the Bucks have to convince their star otherwise.
