Newcastle ended the winning streak
Newcastle dominated all statistics, with 60% of possession, 16 shots - twice as many opponents - including five on target. But that was not enough for them to break the resilience of the away team.
The heavy rain pouring down on St James' Park made the visitors even more cautious in how they entered the game. The Italian pressing toy was adhered to by the Leeds players and their siege did not give Newcastle a chance to coordinate and the attacking trio of Miguel Almiron, Chris Wood and Joelinton experienced a lackluster game.
The most dangerous opportunities Newcastle created were mainly from set pieces. In the 20th minute, home captain Fabian Schar headed off the post in an unmarked position after Kieran Trippier's corner kick. After that, Dan Burn, Sven Botman and Wood all had chances from Trippier's free-kicks but failed to finish.
The first contribution to bring a point for Leeds was midfielder Tyler Adams, who neutralized the detonator in the middle of Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes field. Goalkeeper Illan Meslier also played brilliantly to help Leeds keep a clean sheet and was praised by coach Jesse Marsch after the game. Meslier was the highest-scoring player of the game with five important saves.
The draw did not make Newcastle lose third place. They are still two points ahead of Man Utd but have played more than one game. The next round, teachers and students Eddie Howe as guests at Arsenal on January 3. Leeds, 14th, took on West Ham a day later.
