Nguyen Thuy Linh soon stopped at the world championship
Thuy Linh has never met a Japanese player in the past. In terms of BWF World Badminton Federation rankings, she ranked 25th in women's singles, and Okuhara ranked 11th behind.
However, Okuhara is still more appreciated as the former world number one. She won the bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2017 world champion. In the match at the Royal Gymnasium, Okuhara showed her speed and endurance surpassing Thuy Linh.
In the first game, Thuy Linh chased to the score 12-12, then let Okuhara twice to score four points in a row, before losing the final 15-21. In the second game, the Japanese player had an almost perfect bridge and soon ended with a 21-12 victory.
This is the fourth time in a row that Thuy Linh has stopped in the first round of the world badminton championship. Her best performance was her debut in 2018, reaching the third round before losing 0-2 to China's He Bingjao.
Thuy Linh is the only Vietnamese female tennis player present at the tournament in Denmark. In the past four years, Vietnam has also added Vu Thi Trang – who twice reached the third round in 2019 and 2022.
In the men's singles, Vietnam has Nguyen Hai Dang scheduled to compete at 18:00 today against French tennis player Christo Popov. Lighthouse ranks 86th BWF, 55 places behind Popov.
After the world championship, Nguyen Thuy Linh is expected to attend the Victor Open of the Super 1000 system held in China from September 5 to September 10, before heading to ASIAD 19.
